Testing… Testing… Breakers.tv

Hall of what, now? Yep, congratulations are due to the 4 new MLB HOFers, but this post isn’t about that. It’s all about ME! ME! ME! …and you, too. I’m always looking for ways to improve the Crackin’ Wax brand and today I thought I’d try to tweak the video streaming service.

When I first started doing video breaks, I used UStream. It offers mobile apps and allows viewers to watch from their phones. Unfortunately, it was always glitchy for me and offered poor quality and an annoying amount of commercial interruptions.

Lately I’ve been using Google+ Hangouts. Not only does it offer the ability to watch the stream from your smart phone, the video is broadcast in high quality HD, you can watch it from the assigned Hangout or from my YouTube page, and it offers a chat room. YouTube archives the recording so viewers can watch the break at a later time, and WordPress allows me to stream right from my blog. The downside is that getting into the Hangout chat room isn’t very user friendly. People can watch an uninterrupted high quality video from my blog, from the hangout, from YouTube, and do so on their phone, but they likely won’t be able to join the chat room.

That brings me to Breakers.tv. It’s a streaming service that’s dedicated to trading card group breakers. They use flash video so watching the stream from an iPhone is impossible, but it is possible for me to download an archive recording of the stream within 24 hours to upload to YouTube so viewers can watch later. The video quality isn’t quite as good as YouTube. The only commercial interruptions I’ve noticed so far happen at the beginning of the stream. WordPress does not allow me to embed the Breakers.tv stream, however I have embedded it and a chat room directly into the Varsity Trading Cards website. The upside to using Breakers.tv is that there is potential that the Crackin’ Wax brand would be more visible and more people would be able to use the chat room. The downside is that the video quality is not as good as Google+ Hangouts and viewers would not be able to stream from their iPhones.

I’m curious about giving Breakers.tv a go. I may use it on an upcoming break. Before I decide on that, though, I’d like to hear your thoughts on this and any other streaming service. Do you prefer one over another? If so, why? Is it worth it for me to switch from Google+ Hangouts to Breakers.tv? Do you like my current set-up, or would you like to see a change? Who knows… if the response is overwhelming enough, I just may use Breakers.tv for the Ladies’ Night break—get your spots now!

Gotta say I like the hangouts method better. I agree that it’s a pain to get to but I would hesitate to limit methods to attend the break.

  2. I am not particular about the format as long as the glitches and commercials are kept to a minimum and I can listen to, not watch, it on my phone while in transit.

  3. Nick says:

I hate flash, is going the way of the dodo bird and a system hog as well as a security risk. Not to mention any iPad or iPhone user is out of luck.
