Holy Crap, I Won!

Allow me a moment to preface this post with cliche.

Here goes.

I never win anything!

Okay, let’s get real here for just a moment. I win stuff on very rare occasions. In fact, I won a t-shirt from the Minnesota Twins Twitter account just last year. Sure, it’s a plain white t with a cheesy Twitter bird apparently chirping “Follow Us @Twins” into a quote bubble. Yes, I am wearing it right now.

Aside from that, winning is something that’s about as foreign to me as a good script is to Kevin Smith. Sure, it happens once or twice, but lately–more often than not–the end result is leaves you disappointed and a few bucks poorer.

Ya know. From having played the lottery.

…and going to see Jersey Girl, Zack & Miri and Red State.

That’s all fine and good, though. Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma are in my Top 20. Hey, even John Lennon struck out on multiple occasions, and he was a freaking Beatle for crying out loud.

So what the eff did I win, you ask? Well, recently my buddy Matt over at Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius held a little contest in celebration of his year-long visit to the Ukraine. Turns out he wasn’t able to select a winner before he left on his journey. A few months after the original start date he decided to extend his contest. It was during his contest extension that I decided, what the heck, I’d toss my name in and then completely forget that I even entered.

I do that with box breaks, too. I’ll sign up, send my money, and then a few weeks later I’m stunned to find cards in my mailbox until I remember–d’oh!–I bought these!

Anyhow, not too long ago, Matt tweeted out that, much to my pleasure and surprise, I had won his contest! Again… I NEVER WIN! This time I did. Here are my spoils…

It’s a sweet Mars Attacks 1-of-1 sketch card! I have so few 1-of-1’s in my possession as it is and I’ve never seen a sketch card in person before. I’ve also never seen a Mars Attacks card in person, original or otherwise.

Original, you ask?

For those like me who, until the latest round of Mars Attacks cards were released, thought that Mars Attacks was nothing more than a movie that was probably spun from some old crappy comic book from the 50s–seems you and I were wrong about that. Mars Attacks is actually a Topps original. It was produced by them in 1962 as a 55-card set. The 2012 release, which my 1-of-1 prize came from, was a 50th Anniversary release.

Wanna know something else? These sketch cards are also signed on the back by the sketch artist!

Huge thanks to Matt for the contest and the super cool prize!

Now… the big question… do I keep it?? Do I trade it? Do I put it in the newest round of Trading Up For Charity? I’ll leave that up to you fine folks. Tell me what to do with it (besides just giving it to you for free–no fair!).

We’re now down to just 7 teams! Still available are the A’s, Braves, Mariners, Rays, Reds, Royals and White Sox. Get ’em now while you can!

  1. Cool card. I like that they make the artist sign it. Those alien dudes freaked me out when I was younger.
